Sebastian Herkner
German Sebastian Herkner (born 1981) pursued Product Design at HfG Offenbach University of Art and Design. During this time, he honed his flair for materials, colours and textures, with a growing focus on designing furniture and objects. A brief stint at Stella McCartney in London added to his experience.
In 2006, Herkner established a studio in his own name. Since then, he's created furniture, lighting and smaller pieces for global brands, as well as undertaking interior architecture projects and museum and exhibition design. His remarkable work has garnered numerous awards, including the IF Award, the Iconic Award and the Elle Deco International Design Award (EDIDA).
Herkner was the Guest of Honour at imm cologne 2016, where he shaped the exhibition ‘Das Haus’. In 2019, Maison&Objet named him Designer of the Year, and in 2021 he clinched Milan's most prestigious design accolade, the EDIDA award for Best Designer of the Year. In 2022, he curated alongside luminaries like Robert Wilson, Judith Clarke, Michele de Lucchi and Naoto Fukasawa at Homo Faber, commissioned by the Michelangelo Foundation in Venice.
ROCK SOLID
The new Volos ensemble of side tables and coffee tables is crafted from the finest solid travertine stone that comes in two natural colour variants. Designed by German Sebastian Herkner, the tables have either a rounded or a softly squared top that sits on four elegant oval legs, the shape of which adds an intriguing playfulness as it shifts subtly with each change in perspective.
The simplicity of the Volos tables reflects the unadorned beauty of the natural travertine. The name Volos not only is a nod to the town in Greece of the same name but also cleverly suggests the concept of volume, encapsulating the essence of this unique collection.
THE WONDER OF GLASS
Sebastian Herkner's new Iris table lamp – one of his first two products for blomus – tells the story of this German designer’s endless fascination with glass as both material and phenomenon. Born of two decades of mastery, Herkner’s Iris lamp with its perfectly rounded glass bubble shade reflects light in a uniquely captivating way, now transparent, now opaque, to delicately balance fragility with strength. Trapped within the glass globe are intricate air bubbles evoking the feeling of submerged exploration; the ascending oxygen seems to mirror the rise of inspiration itself. Iris’ luminous bubble rests on an aluminum base; choose from warm gunmetal or a metallic finish. The lamp is cordless and comes with a practical charging deck.
